The International Water Association's 2nd World Water Congress held in Berlin in October 2001 was, like its predecessor, a resounding and well attended success. At the centre of its programme were over three hundred oral presentations addressing the drinking water, sanitation, stormwater and environmental needs of communities worldwide.

From the large number of oral presentations, after full peer review, 37 papers (including two IWA international reports) dealing with water and health have been selected for this issue.

Topics include: pathogens in drinking water and microbial urveillance; Cryptosporidium; Cryptosporidium methods and general microbiology; water and wastewater disinfection; and disinfection of distribution networks.
