Issue 21.3 brings a range of excellent papers describing some fascinating water supply studies around the world – from the South-North water diversion project and various other research in China, to the hydrological and irrigation studies in Iran and the analysis of water demand and desalination enhancement in United Arab Emirates. The paper recommended as Editor’s choice from this issue is by the group of authors from Brazil led by Hugo Moreira, PhD student at the Federal University of Paraíba. Their paper entitled “Real-time neuro-fuzzy controller for pressure adjustment in water distribution systems” presents innovations in control techniques for water distribution systems that aim at increased energy efficiency. The conducted a set of original experiments to test controllers under different operating conditions, resulting in a technique that enables control of the system with greater robustness and performance, even if the data is inaccurate or noisy. Moreira et al. demonstrated that the neuro-fuzzy controller brings a significant increase in pumping system efficiency and reduction in specific energy consumption, while keeping target pressures close to the set-point values and with low hydraulic transients. The paper very clearly describes the authors’ methodology, experimental setup and a range of interesting and convincing results.
