Water Science & Technology, May 2019; Vol. 79 (10): 1887-1896 DOI: https://doi.org/10.2166/wst.2019.180

Why was this paper selected as the Editor's Choice?

"Stakeholders’ involvement in policy as well as decision making processes is fundamental for effective environmental management. Until recently, interested stakeholders came mainly from professional governmental, public, industry / private or not-for-profit organizations. The on-going trend, supported lately by targeted EU and national project calls and grants, is to involve local communities, individuals and non-professionals into the process via a so called citizen science approach. The citizens’ perception on priority issues may fine tune the decision making process, while citizens’ actual practical involvement ensures the wider acceptance and more efficient implementation of programs of measures. The paper presents a very interesting success story of a case study which demonstrated benefits of such an approach in water management based on an ecosystem services framework."
