Discover the Editor's Choice: From each issue of the leading journal Water Science & Technology the core team of editors select one outstanding paper to share across IWA Publishing platforms.

IWA Publishing is pleased to announce that the 48th Editor's Choice Paper, chosen by Jeroen Langeveld, is now Open Access:

A critical review of the data pipeline: how wastewater system operation flows from data to intelligence

Jean-David Therrien, Niels Nicolaï and Peter A Vanrolleghem

https://doi.org/10.2166/wst.2020.393

Why was this paper chosen?

Finally an easy to read paper connecting buzz words like AI, machine learning and digital twins to data-driven operation, maintenance and control of water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). The paper gives the overall picture which serves the reader with a well structured introduction to the topic, while it also gives sufficient starting points for dozens of PhD students for follow up research on all aspects of the long road from 'data to decision'. Although the focus of the paper is on WRRF's, the findings can be extended to a large extent to real pipelines: sewers and transport systems including control structures such as pumps, weirs and valves. An inspiring paper for a large audience!

Jeroen Langeveld, Editor.
