IWA Publishing recently revealed a list of 14 key books made Open Access through Knowledge Unlatched (KU), a library crowd-funding initiative. What did the authors think about their works being selected for Open Access?

"Water and energy issues are inextricably linked. [...] Both are essential to long-term global sustainable development. Making Water, Energy, and Environment – A Primer available as an Open Access document ensures that people all over the world will be able to gain an understanding of these critical global issues, their interdependencies, and the energy revolution that is unfolding rapidly in the early years of the 21st century."

Allan R. Hoffman, author of Water, Energy, and Environment – A Primer

“I am particularly happy that Clean Water Using Solar and Wind will become openly available to students in low-income countries and hope it will inspire them to make a difference in their part of the world.”

Gustaf Olsson, author of Clean Water Using Solar and Wind: opportunities to reach outside the power grid

"We look forward to a much wider uptake [through Open Access] of what we think is a very valuable book on rainwater systems."

Ted Gardner, co-author of Rainwater Tank Systems for Urban Water Supply: Design, Yield, Energy, Health Risks, Economics and Social Perceptions

“IWA Publishing is providing Open Access for this book in order to share the comprehensive knowledge on rainwater tanks with water industry professionals and the wider community across the globe, especially in the developing world. We believe this book will provide students and researchers around the world with a valuable resource on the biophysical aspects and social implications of rainwater tanks.”

Ashok Sharma, co-author of Rainwater Tank Systems for Urban Water Supply: Design, Yield, Energy, Health Risks, Economics and Social Perceptions

"We know our book has already been used to assist a range of projects across the globe. With it becoming Open Access, a wider audience will be able to generate change through the perspectives we have gathered."

Fayyaz Ali Memon & Sarah Ward, authors of Alternative Water Supply Systems

"Chemical oxidation is a powerful and versatile tool to deal with almost all hard-to-treat wastewaters originating from industries. Now available Open Access, this book will reach a much broader audience, providing a guide for the application of the processes based on chemical oxidation and advanced oxidation.”

Isik Kabdasli, co-author of Chemical Oxidation Applications for Industrial Wastewaters

"The FISH Handbook is very useful for finding and selecting the right FISH probes for visualizing important microbes in wastewater treatment systems. It also provides detailed guidance to carry out fluorescense microscopy and quantification of the microbes. I'm very happy that the OA makes it available for everybody working in the field as FISH is an excellent complement to the sequencing-based tools prevailing today, providing more in-depth studies and a better understanding of the ecology of the microbes."

Per Nielsen, co-author of FISH Handbook for Biological Wastewater Treatment

The 14 new Open Access titles are available to download for free on the IWA Publishing website, the KU platform and the Directory of Open Access Books. Among the titles are two new releases including Clean Water Using Solar and Wind and Water, Energy, and Environment (full list and hyperlinks available here).
