Evaluation of modified permeable pavement systems with coal gangue to remove typical runoff pollutants under simulated rainfall

Xiaoran Zhang, Yiran Tian, Junfeng Liu, Yinrui Wang, Ziyang Zhang, Haiyan Li

Why was this paper chosen?

The authors of this paper proposed an interesting approach to improve the purification performance of conventional wastewater parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia (NH4+-N) by installing active layers of coal gangue (CG), a mineral waste, in pavement systems. The illustrations within the paper explain the concept clearly. I would like to quote one of the reviewers of this paper to finish: “This topic is of enormous importance, especially in light of the upcoming Sponge City concept. In the future, this concept should enable cities worldwide to deal with heavy rainfall events, for example, as they are expected in the context of climate change.”
