Discover the Editor's Choice: From each issue of the leading journal Water Science & Technology the core team of editors select one outstanding paper to make Open Access and share across IWA Publishing platforms.

IWA Publishing is pleased to announce that the 26th Editor's Choice Paper, chosen by Jeroen Langeveld, is now Open Access:

Quantifying the sources of uncertainty when calculating the limiting flux in secondary settling tanks using iCFD

Why was this paper selected for Editor's Choice?

Secondary settling tanks (SSTs), or secondary clarifiers, are interesting components of waste water treatment plants (WWTPs), as they are the sole component of WWTPs where hydraulics determine the performance of the WWTP. Profound knowledge on their hydraulic behavior is necessary to maximize the acceptable hydraulic loading of the WWTP while avoiding overloading the secondary settling tanks. Recent research using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)  has resulted in improved understanding of the relevant phenomena, such as 'hindered-transient-compression settling'.  Full CFD, however, is still computationally demanding, especially for practitioners. The iCFD, or interpreted CFD, presented in this paper has been demonstrated to be a promising approach to bridge science and applied technology and to account for the uncertainty in the performance of SSTs, allowing operators to maximize the influent flow to the WWTP while avoiding hydraulic overloading and subsequent sludge loss.
